Needle Felting ACEO

Several of my art friends have been discussing "Needle Felting". One friend bought a kit and created the cutest little teddy bear, so I began investigating. I've been looking for a couple of new art medias to try here in my reliner chair and needle felting sounded quite intriging.

So I checked out a couple of books from the library. I was very intrigued with one of the first samples of a flat felted piece. "Ooooo...." I thought. I could paint with wool!

So I ordered my a sampler set of wool roving and four needles and a needle felting foam pad and I am hooked! Painting with wool is fun, relaxing and an adventure!

I decided, what I am calling "Wool Painting", would make fantastic ACEO's. Here is my first ACEO created with dyed wool roving and a LOT of poking

I know many of my bidders and readers would like more information about needle felting. First, let me show you some pictures with a few descriptions. Then I'll give you a link to my friend's blog. She has even more links to needle felting and you can see the vast array of what can be created.

First, I start with Wool Roving. Roving is basically combed, but unspun wool. It comes in natural colors, but also comes in a vast array of dyed colors. As you can see from these pictures, it is very soft and can be pulled apart and pulled thin and even pulled into strings.

There are many sized of needles. I own four so far. Each one creates a little different texture. They are VERY sharp. You need to have a firm foam pad. I purchased mine after trying to improvise with soft foam pads from around the house.

Then... all I do is lay out some roving in a variety of layers and patterns and I start poking! The more I poke the roving, the more it felts. You can do less for a fuzzier look, more for a flater look. As the roving turns into felt, it can be shaped and molded with more poking! You can also felt one piece onto another!

Painting with Wool is great fun for me. I have to watch what I'm doing or I catch my finger, but it really takes very little energy! I have many plans in my head for more ACEO Wool Paintings, so keep an eye out as I continue to create these wonderful little beauties.

PS: FYI - an ACEO is a minature piece of art that measures 2.5" x 3.5".
